Getting Started

First Workflow

The shortest path from opening an archive to inspecting charts, adjusting the Processing Inspector, and exporting results.

This is the best first exercise for new users.

1. Open an archive

  • open a .ar or .fits file from the sidebar, the menu, or drag and drop
  • PSRUI creates a backend session for the active file
  • profile, waterfall, time-phase, and bandpass previews are fetched from the session preview in parallel

2. Read the basic charts

  • Profile: confirm the pulse shape looks sensible
  • Freq x Phase: look for frequency-dependent RFI or structure changes
  • Time x Phase: check stability across sub-integrations
  • Bandpass: inspect unusual channel averages

3. Open the Processing Inspector

Use the Processing button in the chart toolbar.

Recommended order:

  • start with Zap for channel-level RFI excision
  • continue with Pam for dedisperse, tscrunch, and fscrunch
  • move to TOA only when you already know which template you want

4. Export results

  • Save Archive always writes a new processed file
  • Batch lets you save the current recipe and reuse it across many files

PSRUI today: session previews are non-destructive. Only export operations write new files.
